Lake Monona Bike Loop - Madison, WI

The park's South Unit has a designated snowshoe trail accessible from the parking lot at School Road and Wheeler Road.

Door Creek Park - Madison, WI

Nestled in the Door Creek neighborhood on the east side of Madison, Door Creek Park encompasses about 160 acres of woods and fields in a picturesque valley. Token Creek County Park - DeForest, WI

It's one of the most popular parks in the area in winter, with separate trail loops for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. University of Wisconsin Arboretum - Madison, WI

Fully open to the public year-round, the University of Wisconsin Arboretum is one of the best destinations for winter hiking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing within Madison's city limits. Indian Lake County Park - Cross Plains, WI

The endpoint is Prairie du Chien, where the Wisconsin River meets the Mississippi.

Wisconsin Rustic Road 124 - Mount Horeb to Mount Vernon

The Wisconsin DOT has mapped out 760 miles of designated Rustic Roads throughout the state, including several here in Dane County. The endpoint is Donald County Park, a perfect spot to enjoy a fall hike and picnic.

Kettle Moraine Scenic Drive - Whitewater Lake to Elkhart Lake

1. Pheasant Branch Conservancy
   Location: Middleton, WI
   Birds You Might See: sandhill crane, bald eagle, eastern phoebe, Bell's vireo, barred owl
   Why Visit: This 682-acre nature preserve is a mix of springs, marshes, prairies, and wooded hills. The variety of landscapes provide habitat for numerous bird species, including a pair of bald eagles and a pair of sandhill cranes which nest here annually. The beautiful scenery and well-mainted trails make it great for new and casual birdwatchers as well as more seasoned, serious birders.
   
   
2. Capital Springs Recreation Area
   Location: 9 sections extending from the Nevin Fish Hatchery in Fitchburg, WI to Highway 51 in southeast Madison, WI
   Birds You Might See: northern shoveler, American white pelican, lesser scaup, osprey, eastern kingbird
   Why Visit: This 2,700 acre corridor includes birding hotspots Lunney Lake Farm County Park, Madison Metropolitan Sewerage District's Wildlife Observation Area, Lewis Nine Springs E-Way and Capital Springs State Park. The area's numerous ponds, lagoons and wetlands, along with Nine Springs Creek, Lake Waubesa and Upper Mud Lake, provide the perfect setting for migrating waterfowl and shorebirds. There are numerous bird species to observe in the woodland and prairie sections as well, including dozens of different warblers and sparrows, several species of raptors, and grassland birds like bobolinks and eastern meadowlarks.
       
3. Goose Pond Sanctuary
   Location: Arlington, WI
   Birds You Might See: northern harrier, sedge wren, horned lark, tundra swan, black-crowned night heron
   Why Visit: The Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance (formerly Madison Audubon) maintains Goose Pond Sanctuary, which is free and open to the public for year-round birding. Prairie wetlands and tallgrass prairies in the sanctuary host an impressive variety of over 270 observed bird species. Its status as one of Wisconsin's Important Bird Areas and as a Wisconsin State Natural Area add to its significance.
   
   
4. Military Ridge Prairie Heritage Area
   Location: Southwestern Dane & Eastern Iowa Counties, WI
   Birds You Might See: bobolink, Henslow's sparrow, grasshopper sparrow, eastern meadowlark, upland sandpiper
   Why Visit: This vast 95,000-acre conservation area represents one of the highest concentrations of prairie grassland habitat in the Midwest, making it vitally important for grassland bird species. The area contains both public and private land; Barneveld Prairie and Thomson Memorial Prairie are two of the sections open to the public. If you've ever wanted to bird by bike, the area features an 18-mile bike trail, aptly named Bob-o-Link Blast, starting at Barneveld Prairie and winding through a good portion of the conservation area.
   
   
5. Baxter's Hollow
   Location: Near Devil's Lake State Park, WI
   Birds You Might See: Cerulean warbler, Acadian flycatcher, worm-eating warbler, blue-gray gnatcatcher, hooded warbler
   Why Visit: Baxter's Hollow contains a sizable chunk of Big Woods, the largest intact southern deciduous forest in the state. Over 92 species of birds breed here, including rare forest-dwelling species. There is a rustic trail that's about 5 miles roundtrip, offering stunning views of the scenic gorge where Otter Creek flows. You'll want to gear up with good shoes, long pants, and insect repellant to enjoy an unforgettable birdwatching trip.

Fall is in the air in Dane County, and we are always happy to welcome back one of our favorite seasons. There are many reasons to be happy about autumn's arrival in Wisconsin, but the return of Oktoberfest is at the top of the list. 

German immigrants started arriving here in the 1830s, and today Wisconsin has the highest percentage of individuals who identify as German-American in the United States. So it's no surprise that there are some fantastic Oktoberfest celebrations in the Madison area!

• 9/21 - Oktoberfest at Capital Brewery - 7734 Terrace Ave, Middleton, WI 53562
  Capital Brewery has been one of the best breweries in the region since 1984. In addition to brewing excellent traditional German-style lager beer, the brewery hosts a great Oktoberfest party every year. This year's Capital Brewery Oktoberfest kicks off at 12 pm on September 21 and includes live music, dancing, and games. Capital Brewery's signature Oktoberfest beer will be on tap, while pretzels and bratwurst with all the fixings will be available for purchase. Admission is just $5.
  
  
• 9/21 - Baraboo Oktoberfest - 550 Water St, Baraboo, WI 53913
  The annual Baraboo Oktoberfest is one of Central Wisconsin's largest Oktoberfest events of the year. Taking place at the Circus World Museum grounds overlooking the banks of the Baraboo River, this event runs from 3 to 9 pm on September 21. Expect a fun, family-friendly atmosphere, including authentic live Bavarian oompah bands, festival games, and plenty of excellent locally brewed beer.   The village of New Glarus, known as America's Little Switzerland, hosts its own Oktoberfest celebration every fall. It's one of the biggest parties of the year in this quaint community 30 minutes outside of Madison. Spanning four full days, New Glarus Oktoberfest will take over a large swath of Downtown New Glarus from September 26 to 29. In addition to ample supplies of traditional food and drink, the festival includes games, contests, and activities ranging from wagon rides to chainsaw carving. There will be live music in the festival tent all weekend, including pop, rock, and traditional polka music.
  
  
• 9/28 - Oktoberfest Polka & Pints Pub Crawl - Madison, WI 53702
  One of Madison's most memorable bar crawls will take place on September 28 this year, offering a way to celebrate Oktoberfest while experiencing some of the best of what Madison's nightlife scene has to offer. From 5 to 11 pm, the Oktoberfest Polka & Pints Pub Crawl will take you to several of the best bars in Madison (participating venues TBA) to sample a variety of food, drink, and music.

  Madison's Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church will have its own Oktoberfest celebration on September 29. Several food vendors will also be onsite at the church grounds, offering German potato salad, pretzels, brats, and more.

  If Wisconsin is known for one thing, it's cheese. You'll find some of the best around at Curd Girl, a charming, farm-themed cheese-centric food truck that makes the rounds throughout the Madison area. A staple of local fairs and festivals, they're also available for private bookings. Wondering where else you can find the food truck?   This annual celebration, now in its 67th year, is hosted by VFW Post 7591. It features local Monona organizations and businesses, all coming together with the community to honor the fallen. A 9:30 am kickoff starts at the flags in front of Monona Grove High School, where the national anthem will be performed along with a memorial service. The parade begins at 10 am and moves south along Monona Drive to Pflaum Road, ending at Sennett Middle School around noon. There will also be a luminary path from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 and Monday, May 27 in nearby Winnequah Park.
